The mandate of the FAI is to promote, foster and develop football in Ireland. Investment by the Irish Sports Council has been used as a catalyst for substantial and measureable growth in all areas around the FAI's 19 development programmes. The Irish Sports Council has contributed €17 million to the FAI since 2004. That funding is matched on a 2:1 basis by the FAI. Examples of work that Council funding allows the FAI to carry out are as follows: A Grassroots Football programme that includes: - Summer Soccer Schools - 22,000 participants
- EA Sport Participation - Primary Schools
- Buntús Programme - Primary Schools - 180,000 students
- Universities - 6 co-funded facilitators
- Football for All; 13 programmes for 12 groups for people with a disability - 3,500 participants
- Social Inclusion; including Street Leagues and Late Night Soccer
- Futsal - 17,000 participants under Street Leagues, schools and Late Night Soccer programmes
- Intercultural Programme - 5,000 participants
- Player Development; Emerging Talent Programme - 2,500 participants at 12 regional centres
- Women's Football; Leagues, Camps and Emerging Talent Programme - 16,000 registered players

Technical Department Personnel - 92 Technical Department Staff, including National Coordinators and Development Officers, roll out the FAI's programmes nationwide.
