The Executive Board of the Union International de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) got together today for 2-days of talks in Limassol, on the south coast of Cyprus, as a precursor to the 2013 Congress which begins on Friday. Hosted by the Cyprus Modern Pentathlon Biathlon Federation at the Mediterranean hotel under the guidance of their President and secretary General of the National Olympic Committee General Charalambos Lottas and the team at Top Kinisis, the event is set to welcome delegates from over 40 nations. The Press conference, held at the Cyprus Olympic Committee headquarters in the capital Nikosia, saw General Lottas welcome the UIPM family to the country and hoped they would enjoy the hospitality. He stated, “It is with great pleasure to have UIPM in Cyprus again after the outstanding success of the Biathle Triathle World Championships. Modern Pentathlon is such a historic sport, especially if you think that the first ever Ancient Greek Games pentathlon champion was Lampis of Sparta, and we are delighted to be able to welcome all the delegates in Limassol.” UIPM President Dr h. c. Klaus Schormann praised the organisation, declaring, “The Biathle Triathle was brilliant and organised at such short notice. It gave me such faith in the Federation. Cyprus is very active with their development and we want to support our emerging nations. We have many things to discuss at our Congress but there is a big focus on our development”. The 2013 Congress agenda includes reports by the President and all Executive Board Members as well as the Chairs of the various Committees.

Following a week of clean-up and hardship from the tragedy of Typhoon Hainan, locally in the Philippines known as Typhoon Yolanda, the Negros Biathle Competition was held this weekend. The event was moved from Cadiz City on the northern tip of Negros Island, which suffered major damage from the super typhoon, to Canonoy Beach Resort further south and further away from the path which the eye of the storm took. All who took part thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were left with a big smile on their faces. The event was sponsored by the Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida, USA Bid Committee for the UIPM Modern Pentathlon World Cup Final 2014 and World Cup 2015. Sarasota-Bradenton provided transportation for many of the participants as well as a barbeque picnic for the athletes and their families and has assisted in relief efforts from the natural disaster. Through the kind efforts of Sarasota-Bradenton, the local community was able to enjoy a Modern Pentathlon day of sports and recreation. Immediately following the disaster, UIPM and USA Pentathlon joined forces to contribute food and medical supplies to victims of the typhoon in the Philippines in the region where the biathle event was scheduled to be held. The Negros biathle competition included competitors from age 7 to 64 years old with the idea for everyone to take part and simply have fun and escape the tragedy of the storm. It was held at the beautiful Canonoy Beach Resort in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental province. The day included two biathle competition plus running races and beach football. Medals were given for each of the events. The outstanding male athlete was 13 year old Ronel Segovia (Youth C) who won both biathle competitions in his age group and was the over-all winner of all competitors. Ronel is an accomplished long distance runner and swimmer and his name will be forwarded to the Philippine Modern Pentathlon Federation. The outstanding female was Juvy Mae (Youth C) who won 1 of the 2 biathles and then won a running race to claim the ladies trophy. The competition, along with the food and medical aid was a great relief to the children and people of Balabag.

After learning of the devastating effect of the recent typhoon in the Philippines, John Amabile of the organising committee of the 2014 World Cup Final, travelled to Balabag on the Negros Island on behalf of UIPM to bring food to those affected by the disaster. Typhoon Haiyan has left four million children desperate for food, clean water and shelter. Thanks to the efforts of John Amabile, the children of Balabag are now eating soup with chicken, vegetables and rice, sponsored by UIPM. With UIPM always keen to use the sport of Modern Pentathlon and as educational tool and to promote sports participation at all levels. This weekend, the kids took part in a biathle (run/swim/run) competition. This initiative by the 2014 World Cup Final Sarasota, Florida, bid and included a barbeque and picnic for all the families in the village. Even through this adversity, the locals showed tremendous courage and the whole visit was a good celebration of sport and its power to help. Respects were also shown to those who were less fortunate and perished during the typhoon.

The South American Modern Pentathlon Championships held in Chile this weekend at the Military Academy in Santiago saw Argentina’s Ayelen Zapata triumph in the Senior women’s draw before claiming a second gold by teaming up with Emanuel Zapata to take the Mixed Relay title. In Santiago, Ayelen Zapata beat Brazil’s Priscilla Oliveira to the top prize whilst Larissa Lellys had to settle for bronze. The 23-year-old looked in fine form in the combined as he blistering time of 13:35.61 made the difference after she had struggled in the morning fence. Ayelen Zapata then combined with her Emanuel Zapata in the Mixed Relay to win gold once more to cap a memorable competition for herself. In the men’s, Chile’s Esteban Bustos perfect ride and time of 11:40.56 in the combined ensured he took the gold ahead of Brazil’s Felipe Nascimiento and Emanuel Zapata of Argentina. 16-year-old Javiera Roses put in a display of such high technical standards in the women’s Youth competition that she was the stand-out performer of the weekend. Her poise and maturity ensured she scooped gold with an impressive total of 3,468 points. This was her second continental title after she had claimed the Sudama Junior trophy last year. The talented Roses held off stiff challenges from Bianca Cavalcanti and Argentina’s Cisneros Ailen who claimed silver and bronze respectively. Roses had come second in the fence with 976 points before finishing third in swimming with a time of 2.25,97 before a blistering 15.40,11 lap in the combined put her on her way to a sumptuous gold. In the men’s Youth draw, local hope Benjamin Ortiz finished fourth with 4,000 points in a day dominated by Brazil and Argentina. The gold went to Brazil’s Yan Freitas after he claimed a total of 4,240 points with Leandro Corradini of Argentina taking silver, and fellow Brazilian Victor Barbosa with bronze.

With 20 nations in attendance, the event at the Manchester Conference Centre over the weekend 8-10 November was a truly international affair with delegates from France, Germany, Turkey and beyond. The conference got off to an unofficial start on Friday evening, with a keynote speech from former Bath Rugby and England rugby union player Phil de Glanville who emphasized the need for pentathlon coaches to identify the physical and technical prowess of their athletes, comparing the need for a more tactical awareness in his own sport. As Hartpury College’s Director of Elite Sport, de Glanville was well-positioned to draw comparisons between the sports of pentathlon and rugby union, both very successful at Hartpury. He set up a high standard of presentation that was to set a theme for the conference. Saturday opened officially with opening speeches from GB Olympic Team Manager Dominic Mahony and the UIPM’s Luca Barracchi, who called upon the delegates to find the time to contribute to a global effort to develop the sport of modern pentathlon, and congratulated them for taking the time to be present at the conference. Then began the formal lectures on talent identification and development, the Pentathlon GB Coach Apprentice Programme and sports psychology for the modern pentathlete. This was followed by further lectures from Pentathlon GB Performance Director Jan Bartu, who discussed the financial impact of supporting a world-class athlete through an Olympiad. After lunch, sport-specific lectures took place, with Dr Carl Payton discussing swimming biomechanics and race analyses, a discussion with Bernie Moss on the athlete-coach training log systems used at Pentathlon GB, and a discussion of the integration Pentathlon GB has with the English Institute of Sport (EIS) and how this benefits athletic performance and injury rehabilitation from Dr Paul D. Jackson, Deputy Director of Medicine at the EIS. Saturday concluded with a discussion from laser pistol manufacturing rivals IQ Shooting and Pentashot EU and a keynote speech from the BBC’s Stuart Pollitt on the British media landscape and its relationship with modern pentathlon. Sunday picked up where Saturday left off, jumping straight in with a fascinating review of a two-year PhD study by Claire Dadswell, an analysis by Carlton Rowlands M.Ost (Chamonix Sports Injury Clinic) of lower limb injuries in pentathlon and a speech from Luca Baracchi of the UIPM on their view of pentathlon development. Finally, the conference concluded with an open forum, where delegates debated issues and proposed potential solutions to be presented at the next UIPM congress, covering matters such as the sustainability of the current calendar and how to ensure the WMPCC has a future in the sport. Speaking at the conference, Pentathlon GB Performance Direct Jan Bartu said, “We didn’t expect the have the response we’ve had today. It’s great for Pentathlon GB and pentathlon worldwide. “It’s been an opportunity to share experiences and network together so we can learn from each other. You can really feel the buzz. At events like this, we really are a community.” The event has yet to be organized for next year, but with this year’s success there springs new hope that the WMPCC will become a cornerstone of pentathlon development worldwide. The dates for 2014 are 7th – 10th November 2014 and hope that federations can plan local calendars to block these dates out to enable maximum attendance.

After mixed weather in the Ivorian capital Abdijan, it was Sondos Tarek of Egypt who dominated the girls draw with her 3804 points qualifying her for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games next summer in Nanjing, China. In the men’s, it was compatriot Sherif Nazier who triumphed, to also book his place for the big show. The competition started with the fencing and the Egyptian showed their superior skills with the epees as they took the first 4 places with Sherif Nazir the dominant force with 32 victories and 1168 points to his name after one discipline. Abdel Rahman Korany came second with 25 victories and 1000 points while Ahmed Hossam and Youssef Hassan both came in third with 24 victories and 976 points. In the swim Sherif Nazir extended his lead after recording an impressive time of 2:10.30 in the pool as Youssef Hassan of Egypt set the standard with 2:05.71 in the water to maintain his second place on the leaderboard. Diop Mamadou of Senegal was fourth. Nazir began the final event of the day, the combined, with a 35 seconds cushion over his nearest rival. Youssef Hassan demonstrated his precise shooting to catch up with the leader after the second series at the range. The 3rd series was amazing from Youssef, who got five in five, but unfortunately for him, in the final series he was pegged back and Nazir showed better speed on the final lap of the course to bring home the gold and in the process qualify for Nanjing. He told us afterwards, ”I am so so happy with my results today, and finally my dream come true, it was a very long season for me, and I would like to thank everyone who helped me getting here today, my family, my coaches, Ehap Sambo, Mohamed Hossam, Mohamed Fouad, and the federation president for believing in me from the beginning.” Youssef Hassan in the end had to settle for silver with Abdel Rahman Korany making it three Egyptians on the podium. In the women’s even, it was again the Egyptian contingency that dominated with the North African nation taking the first four places in Abidjan. Nour Abbas began her campaign with 34 victories on the pistes while Haidy Adel came in second with 29 victories to notch up 1020 points. Nada Mohamed was third and Sondos Tarek was just behind her before the swim. Mohamed Fouad, the Egyptian fencing coach said after the morning session, "I am satisfied with the results as some of the athletes really surpassed themselves to put themselves in a very good position.” The swim saw Vermaas of South Africa go fastest as she clocked 2:23.70 in the 200m freestyle to move up to third overall behind Egyptian duo Nour Abbas and Haidy Ade.This meant Vermaas began the combined 22 secs behind the leader. The combined event was pure drama, completely unpredictable as they women kept changing position in a pulsating finale. Sondos Tarek somehow managed to climb her way up from fourth on the starting grid, to win the event and book her place for Nanjing 2014. Haidy Adel had looked on course to take gold but she struggled with her aim whilst Sondos Tarek was irresistible with her pistol. An elated Tarek said at the finish line, "I would like to thank my coaches as they had a big role in my hard mission and their support really helped me achieve this amazing victory. My coaches Ehab Saied and Mohamed Hossam really made me progress with my shooting and that was a deciding factor. A special thanks to my mother who always stood by me and she was really the driving force in helping me reach the top in this sport". Haidy Adel was second overall whilst Vermaas finished with bronze. The South African telling us, "I am so happy with my performance, it was my first ever pentathlon international event, and I hope for many more".

A milestone was reached this Saturday as the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Government inaugurated today an observation tower at the Olympic Park to celebrate the landmark 1000 days to go until the opening ceremony. Standing nine metres high, visitors had a privileged view of some of the most important venues that will be used for the sporting mega-event. The first people to visit the tower – and who were received by Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes and the President of the Municipal Olympic Company (EOM), Maria Silvia Bastos Marques – are the governor Sergio Cabral; the executive secretary of the Sports Ministry, Luis Fernandes; the president of the Olympic Public Authority, the Army general Fernando Azevedo e Silva; the president of the Rio 2016 Organising Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman; and members of the City Council, a body which is made up of citizens from different sectors of Rio’s society who contribute to the development of the city. During this first visit, the group were able to observe important advances in the works, like the first phase of construction of the Tennis Centre, which started at the end of October. More advanced and already in the foundation construction phase are the works on the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), the Main Press Centre (MPC) and the three sports halls that, after the Games, will form part of the Olympic Training Centre (OTC). In the first half of 2014 the remaining three sport venues in the Olympic Park will start to be erected: the Velodrome, the Aquatic Centre and the Handball Arena. In the construction of the Olympic Park observation tower, the Rio Mais concessionaire recycled part of the grandstand from the old Jacarepaguá Racetrack, which was at the same site. In the future, the tower will form part of a guided tour aimed at students, Brazilian and foreign visitors, public authorities and Rio’s inhabitants in general.

With under a year to go until the2014 Youth Olympic games begin in the Chinese city of Nanjing, the YOG African Qualifying event will be the first opportunity for some of the best pentathletes on the continent to qualify for the big event next summer. Abidjan hosts the event with all the facilities within 50m walking distance from each other at the Cocodu University. This African championship is the most important competition of the year for any aspiring Olympian. Both men and women will be taking part and all eyes will be on the experienced Egyptian pentathletes who have the know-how to really come good in Ivory Coast. The African confederation of modern pentathlon has taken great steps to introduce the sport on the continent with its President Sameh Gemeh showing the way and it was his vision that helped Abidjan become the host of this prestigious event. The organizers of the competition worked tirelessly these past few weeks, and with the help of Olympian Raouf Hossam of Egypt, they have managed to stage something unique. Under the supervision of UIPM Technical Delegate Pedro Petruschinski and International Judge Ali Assem, the athletes have the best platform with which to perform at the highest level. "I would like to thank the Ivorian Federation of modern pentathlon for hosting this event and for the hospitality, and I chose this country because of its passion and willingness to host. This also gives an opportunity to brand new country to experience this type of competition. It also gives the opportunity to a whole new generation to get a taste of a top level Modern Pentathlon. The seminar was a great learning experience, educating and getting all judges up to speed with all the latest rules. I wish everyone involved the very best of luck here in Abidjan", said Sameh Gemeh. This is only the second time in history that a competition of this stature has taken place away from Egypt, and in both senior and youth African qualification, Karina Gerber of South African remains the only non-Egyptian to qualify, having gone on to compete at the Sydney 2000 Games. In last Youth African qualification, it was two Egyptians who succeeded in qualifying for the Singapore 2010 YOGs as Jihan Elmidany and Eslam hamed were triumphant. There are some fantastic stories in Abidjan, none more so than that of Prof. Tony Silvestre, a 26 years old coach/teacher from Burkina Faso, who travelled all night by car to reach the Ivorian capital to compete. He told us, "it has been a long trip but it valued the long hours in my small car. I hope getting some good experience here both in competition and during the judges’ course. Hopefully there will be more chances to see our athletes competing but we need more training and equipment. I want to thank UIPM and Pedro for his valuable time. Africa needs it." The Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games today launches its sport pictograms, continuing the tradition of each edition of the Games defining the sports on its programme through graphic icons. “For the first time, all Olympic and Paralympic sports are individually represented. This is one of our unique contributions to the history of the Games,” said Carlos Arthur Nuzman, the President of the Rio 2016 Organising Committee. During the creative process for the Paralympic pictograms, Rio 2016’s team of designers sought to portray the integration of the athletes’ different impairments with sport in a balanced, natural way, depicting prostheses, blindfolds and other elements. The word ‘pictogram’ comes from Greek and Latin. Originally, it means ‘painted word’. This original meaning was the source of inspiration for the first strokes of the Rio 2016 pictograms, which were based on the official Rio 2016 typography. After researching each sport, the first strokes were made by hand. These strokes were then reconstructed on a computer, fitting the contours of the letters. The athlete bodies and sports equipment were built from the characters, or part of them, in a continuous stroke, with variations in thickness in order to give the impression of depth. The pebble shapes, which are a characteristic of Rio 2016’s visual language, support the designs and alter their shape according to the athletes’ different movements. Work was completed in 16 months, five of which were devoted to the validation of the pictograms by the 42 International Federations. In total, there are 64 pictograms, 41 Olympic and 23 Paralympic. The pictograms can be used both inside and outside the pebbles, in all colours. Rio 2016 Brand Director Beth Lula said they are important tools for engaging the public from an early stage. “The pictograms, from now until 2016, will serve as a communication platform for the promotion of the sports, for partner activations, and will be present in all the Games’ visual identity, including their application in venue decoration, signposting, tickets and licensed products, among other things,” she said. The origin of the strokes: the Rio 2016 font The development project of the Rio 2016 font, launched in July 2012, was one of the innovations of the Games’ branding programme. The typographic concept, developed by Dalton Maag, was inspired by the letters and numbers of the Rio 2016 logo and the essence of the Games — passion and transformation — which links the Olympic and Paralympic brands. Based on the contours of Rio, the font represents elements such as the calçadão de Copacabana (Copacabana promenade), which is depicted in the letters ‘m’ and ‘n’, and the Pedra da Gávea (a mountain in Rio de Janeiro), which is depicted in the letter ‘r’. The letters are drawn with a single, continuous stroke, an agile and fluid movement that suggests the movement of athletes. Creative team The Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games opted to set up an internal design team for the creation of the Games’ main graphic elements, probably one of the world’s most complex design projects. In addition to the designers, a group of 28 other Rio 2016 staff were directly involved in the development of the pictograms.

"IN MY first meeting in Lausanne with the FEI Bureau after my election in 2006, I proposed limiting FEI Presidents to two four-year terms. I suggested that reform, which was later adopted as an FEI Statute, because it is essential to ensure fresh thinking and avoid a sense of entitlement within the leadership of an International Sport Federation. "Whilst I very much appreciate and am honoured by efforts of the FEI Regional Group Chairpersons and the National Federations to amend the FEI Statutes to permit me, or any FEI President to seek a third term, my views on the benefits of a two-term limit have not changed since the day I was elected.

The rain and cold weather was not enough to dampen the spirit of all the children who took part in this year’s edition of the World School Biathlon Swiss Cup. Despite the conditions, the competition was held outdoors and there were smiles all around with many getting their first taste of a multi-discipline event. Derek Bucassi won the men’s 11/12-year-old while his sister won the same category in the women’s draw. Sven Hopfner and Karen Keller won the respective men and women’s 13/14-year-old category whilst in the 15/16-year-olds it was Fabian Meeusen who triumphed in the men’s and Lisa Mamie in the women’s. The World School Biathlon is a competition that is fun and simple to organize and helps federations increase their membership and also recruit the right type of athletes for international events It is also a great opportunity to expose thousands of youngsters to modern pentathlon and our scoring system which attempts to balance the performances in different sports. It is a system of competition which allows athletes worldwide to compete against each other by having the federations send the results to the UIPM who will in turn compile them and maintain the current world standings on the UIPM website. With September ushering in the cold weather in Moscow, the Ministry of Defence Cup was moved indoors and the athletes thrived with top-class organization ensuring a high quality competition. There were some sublime performances in the mixed relay, making for an unforgettable weekend of Modern Pentathlon action in Russia. Fresh from her bronze medal at the UIPM World Championships in Kaohsiung, World No.8 and local girl Donata Rimsaite claimed the title to confirm her fine form in this end of the season. The 25-year-old had been below her best this year but her fantastic showing in Taiwan had given her a huge confidence boost and after excelling in the fence, she and Serguei Karyakin won convincingly in the Russian capital this weekend. After an underwhelming 2013 campaign for Karyakin, the 2011 European silver medallist delighted the home crowd as he provided the perfect partnership, complementing Rimasaite in all departments as they cruised to a well-deserved victory.. There were 50,000 USD up for grabs so the competition was fierce.
