Welcome to Issue 32 and the 10th Irish Sports Council Newsletter Ezine
Summer has arrived. The next few months are going to be busy and an exciting period for sport both at national and international level - the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championships, the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the One Day Cricket International against Australia, the European Amateur Boxing Championships in Moscow, the Irish Open and 3 Majors in golf, Wimbledon, the Irish Rugby Tour to the Southern Hemisphere, the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona, the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, and many more.
In this edition we are featuring articles on the launch of the 2009 Anti-Doping Annual Report, the announcement of the LSP funding for 2010, the opening event of An Post Cycle and the Irish Sports Council Presentation to the Joint Oireachtas Committee.
I would like to welcome Minister Hanafin to her new role and the Irish Sports Council look forward to working closely with her in the development of Irish sport over the next few years.

02 Anti-Doping: Irish Sports Council Publishes Anti-Doping Annual Report for 2009
The anti-doping programme marked its 10th year of activity with 955 tests in 36 sports. There was a total of seven adverse findings. Three of the positives were for cannabinoids, two in motorcycling and one in soccer, which resulted in short bans. Four more adverse findings were forwarded to the relevant international federation which has the responsible for managing the case.
03 Participation: Irish Sports Council Announces Sports Partnership Funding for 2010
The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sports Mary Hanafin T.D. today announced the Irish Sports Council's funding package for the national network of Sports Partnerships. The 32 Partnerships have been allocated almost €6.3 million in funding in 2010 and this will be matched by revenue from other sources bringing the total invested in local participation initiatives through the Partnerships to more than €12.5 million in 2010.
04 Participation: An Post Cycle Series Kicks off with the Tour of Sligo
The An Post Cycle Series got off to a great start on Sunday with the Tour of Sligo. Cycling legend Sean Kelly joined 1,400 cyclists of all ages and abilities who got out on the roads to enjoy the beautiful scenery in glorious sunshine. Sean took the opportunity to cycle along with participants in all three events. First off at 9am was the 160km Ox Mountain Challenge with 420 cyclists involved. This was followed by the biggest event of the day, the 60km Lough Gill Circuit with 660 cyclists involved, and at 12 noon 320 enthusiastic cyclists headed for Hazelwood on the 10km event.

06 Women in Sport: Sportswoman Award for April Dora Gorman
Following their daughter's sporting career these past few years has ensured many a memorable moment for the parents of Dora Gorman. Nothing, though, quite matched last month's adventure when, thanks to that excitable volcano in Iceland, they had to take a 40-hour coach trip from Kiev to Amsterdam, and from there make their way home to Barna, Co Galway.
07 Irish Trails: Second e-newsletter from Leave No Trace Ireland
Leave No Trace is an Outdoor Ethics Education Programme designed to promote and inspire responsible outdoor recreation through education, research and partnerships. The programme is based on 7 core principles which act as guidelines when making decisions in the outdoors. Leave No Trace is about our personal responsibility for protecting the areas we use for recreation whether on land, underground or afloat. So the challenge for us all is to get out and practice Leave No Trace – don’t wait for others, just do it!
08 Participation: EU 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion
The European Council and the European Commission have designated 2010 as the European Year for combating poverty and social exclusion. The proposal to designate 2010 as the European Year for combating poverty and social exclusion is intended to reaffirm and strengthen the initial political commitment of the EU at the start of the Lisbon strategy, March 2000, to making “a decisive impact on the eradication of poverty”.
